Chandigarh: The November 29 arrest of a murder convict, who had escaped from the custody of Punjab Police in 2015, has led the crime branch of Chandigarh Police to six stolen motorcycles, said DSP (crime) Pawan Kumar on Sunday.

Rakesh alias Billa, 32, was remanded in judicial custody on Sunday, after the police produced him in court at the end of his three-day police remand. DSP Kumar said Billa, a resident of Saketri, Panchkula, was arrested nabbed at a trap laid near Punjab University (PU) on the night of November 29, after they got a tip-off about his movement there. "Later, we found that the motorcycle he was using was stolen from Sector 39," the DSP said.

The DSP said Billa was arrested by Mohali police in connection with a murder in 2013. A Mohali court had convicted him in the murder case and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

On December 24, 2015, when Punjab Police were bringing him to Mohali from Nabha jail, Billa escaped after making an excuse for answering the nature's call. When he was on the run, Bill lived in different parts of Tricity and Punjab, the DSP added.

During his three-day police remand, Billa informed the crime branch of police about the stolen motorcycles.

Police claimed they had solved three cases of motor vehicle theft registered at Sector 39 police station, and one each at police stations in Sector 34, Sector 36 and Sarangpur, with the arrest.
