The first two sessions of play belonged to Sri Lanka on the third day of the final Test where they need a win to level the series. But the final session gave away all the hard work of the previous two. Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews both struck centuries to take Sri Lanka forward and had India toiling amid poor fielding efforts including dropped catches. However, once Mathews fell, the chain of exits began to form with wickets falling at regular intervals. Sadeera gave company for a while with his 33 but once he exited, the tail went down in a heap. At stumps, Sri Lanka stand at 356/9 and trail by 180 runs. Chandimal is still alive at 147.

India vs Sri Lanka 3rd Test Day 3 Score and Updates:

1630 hrs IST: Sri Lanka have survived the final 20 minutes and will come out to bat once again. Sri Lanka see play out and stand at 356/9 at stumps to trail by 180

1621 hrs IST: Checking for light. It has become quite dim. Lightmeters come out. Umpires happy to continue for now with six overs remaining to be bowled.

1611 hrs IST: Lakshan Sandakan the new man in for Sri Lanka.

1610 hrs IST: GONE! Gamage is given out leg before and he goes for a review. Jadeja the bowler, it has pitched in line and there is a good gap between bat and pad. Only an inside edge could have saved him but nothing there. Umpire’s call on hitting the stumps and Sri Lanka are nine down

1538 hrs IST: R Ashwin continues to spell trouble for Sri Lanka. Niroshan Dickwella departs for nought. Tries to slash and play it late but he is done in by the pace of the quicker one. Slides on and hits the off stump. Sri Lanka are 322/7, trail by 214 runs

1526 hrs IST: Two wickets in quick succession for India. Roshen Silva is done in by a top-spinner from R Ashwin. It is looped up, given some air, tries to defend but it spins in, gets the glove and falls kindly to Dhawan at forward short leg. Sri Lanka are 318/6, trail by 218 runs

1523 hrs IST: GONE! What a catch by Saha. The wicketkeeper gets down low and moves to his right to hold on. Needless shot by Samarawickrama there. It was wide and outside off. Could have let that one go and the shot was a nothing one as well

1515 hrs IST: Comic scenes in Delhi. Chandimal came forward and tried to push the ball down the ground for runs but Kohli is handy to prevent anything. He senses a quick run and has a throw at the striker’s end but has Samarawickrama in the middle. It hits his elbow. Kohli immediately puts his hand up in apology and goes up to check on him

1458 hrs IST: Ashwin and Jadeja coming very close to wickets. Sadeera tries to slog after coming down but it is not controlled. Does enough to keep it away from the fields. Next over, Chandimal gets a close shave with an outside edge that goes past Saha. Now, Sadeera almost chops on. Doesn’t look confident with his shot with the ball going away from him. Allowed the ball to come in and spin further and he almost pays for it. Goes very close to the off stump

1450 hrs IST: Sadeera getting more of the runs without playing anything flashy while Chandimal happy to hold fort at the other end.

1435 hrs IST: Played with soft hands to pick up a single and Dinesh Chandimal lets out a huge scream as he gets to 10th Test century and second against India. Spectacular series for him

1410 hrs IST: TEA! Sri Lanka are 270/4 at Tea with Angelo Mathews the only wicket to fall in the session and on the day. Chandimal is two runs from a ton and has Samarawickrama at the other end. Trail by 266 runs

1358 hrs IST: WICKET! R Ashwin ends the 158 run partnership and Mathews walks. No dropping this time. Good take by Saha in fact. Fantastic knock by Mathews to score 111 and he goes having batted over six hours. The ball spins away a touch, gets a thin edge and Saha does brilliantly to hold on. Not easy those. Sri Lanka are 256/4 and trail by 280 runs

1355 hrs IST: Umpires put the ball through the ring and it has lost its shape. Get a new one and R Ashwin gets first chance to use it

1320 hrs IST: DROPPED! Another chance goes begging. Ravindra Jadeja is the bowler and he is not pleased with that effort from substitute Vijay Shankar and it is Mathews who survives once again. That’s the third time he has been dropped now. Leaps high at mid-off and it goes between his hands. Not very easy to hold on but probably didn’t time his jump well

1240 hrs IST: HUNDRED! Angelo Mathews punches the air as he brings up his 8th Test hundred and third against India. This one has come after a span of 37 innings. What an important one for Sri Lanka but comes with the ‘what if’ from India’s fielding perspective

1240 hrs IST: Uh-oh! DROPPED AT SECOND SLIP! There’s that troubling position for India once again. One area where they need to improve on. Yesterday it was Dhawan and Kohli with mistakes there and now Rohit Sharma joins the list. It was an absolute sitter too. Back of length and outside off, Mathews takes a jab at it, gets an outside edge and the new ball goes flying to Rohit who lets it drop.

1215 hrs IST: Loud appeal by India for lbw on Chandimal. R Ashwin the bowler, quicker one by Ash and it hits the front pad low which convinced the team to go up in the appeal and then take the review. DRS says it was pitching outside off and impact was in line but it was spinning away to miss the stumps. India lose one review

1210 hrs IST: Second session underway in Delhi and India need to go all out now to get an all-important breakthrough. The partnership up to 122 now

1130 hrs IST: A wicketless first session in Delhi. Dinesh Chandimal on 52 and Angelo Mathews on 90 after the first session. Finally Sri Lanka’s senior most batsmen rise and take responsibility. At lunch, Sri Lanka are 192/3 and trail by 344 runs

1123 hrs IST: Careless shot from Mathews and he almost pays for it. Lapse in concentration more like it. Goes for a big shot and over the covers region, gets a thick outside edge and the ball, luckily for him, lands short of the point fielder

1112 hrs IST: Fifty up for Dinesh Chandimal. Gets there with an edge that runs off for a four just wide of the fielder. His 16th Test fifty and third in a row. Head-and-shoulders above the rest in the series – 28, 20, 57, 60 and now 51*

1108 hrs IST: Bishan Singh Bedi, recently getting a stand named after him at the DDCA Conclave, chimes in on the Delhi pollution and the debate that ensued.

1102 hrs IST: R Ashwin into the attack for the first time today.

1040 hrs IST: So Sri Lanka have survived the first hour of play. Completely unscathed despite Shami bowling some gorgeous deliveries and Jadeja getting close to one right before the breather.

1030 hrs IST: Beauty from Jadeja. Reduces his length just a touch, made Mathews go for a defensive stroke, ball spun from the straight line and ripped away from the Sri Lankan batsman’s bat. Almost takes the off stump in its wake

1028 hrs IST: As per Cricbuzz, Sadeera has been cleared to be part of this game, Sri Lanka’s manager Asanka Gurusinha has confirmed

1025 hrs IST: First official warning to Mathews for running down the pitch

1005 hrs IST: Chandimal has gestured to the dressing room that he needs help. Hinting that he is feeling uneasy. Kohli just moving about and not getting involved yet. Not sure how the Indian management will react to it. If the reactions after Day 2 are any indication, more accusations of time wasting on Sri Lanka’s part await. For now, though, we continue

0930 hrs IST: Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma share the ball on the third day. Pictures, once again, don’t paint a rosy picture of Delhi. Bit of sun out but it is quite hazy. Reports suggest, if both captains agree, the match could be abandoned. The match referee will see how the Indian players react to the conditions today

0920 hrs IST: At the moment, more than the pitch, the air quality needs a good looking at. Like the first two days, its a bit sunny and hazy in the capital. Some Indian players out limbering up. The air quality measured nearest to Kotla, at Mandir Marg, reads “Hazardous”. Despite that, play to resume on time.

0915 hrs IST: Pitch report from Kotla brought to you by Sunil Gavaskar and Russel Arnold: “The sun is breaking through and the blue skies are out. It still played very well. There is nothing in the pitch. The grass might be a little more drier than the previous two days. We saw a couple of balls pitched on the rough; one ball turned and one ball went straight. Things can start to happen looking at the rough. The bowlers can exploit it. No devils on the pitch, the odd ball will turn.”

0900 hrs IST: Hello and Good morning for our continued live coverage of the India vs Sri Lanka which has reached the final Tests third day. The second day was one that would go down in history for stoppages caused due to smog. For the crowd in attendance, they saw Virat Kohli score a sixth double-ton before the seamers came all guns blazing with two quick wickets. Sri Lanka composed themselves with two experienced heads in Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews in the middle.
