FIR against website for ‘hurting religious feelings’, Twitter abuzz

BENGALURU: Twitter was abuzz with discussions about a complaint filed against a website for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, in Bengaluru on Sunday.The topic was trending on Twitter following a complaint by one Kavana Basavakumar, who alleged that a website called postcardkannada.com had made comments against historical figures such as Kittur Rani Chennamma and Onake Obavva.

The complainant had alleged that the ‘unknown administrators of the website had wrote that Kittur Rani Chennamma had illicit relationship with the British and Onake Obavva shared a bed with Hyder Ali’, and trended it in social media sites. “This has hurt the women community and followers of these leaders,” the complaint said and urged police to initiate action against the culprits.

Following the complaint #WeSupportPostCard trended in social media during the late hours of Sunday, with more than 5,000 tweets on the topic. Many came in support of the website.A complaint was filed under Section 295A of the IPC - Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.
