NEW DELHI: Congress hit back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for mocking its presidential election by raking up the issue of "internal democracy" in the BJP by naming party veterans LK Advani and Murali Manohar Joshi.

Congress spokesman Randeep Surjewala alleged that BJP veterans such as L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sanjay Joshi, Keshubhai Patel and Anandiben Patel were "victims" of Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah's "internal democracy".

"Dear PM, your love for 'Shahzad', 'Shah-Zada' and 'Shaurya' is now well known, but nation wants to know when will you reply to the questions raised by senior BJP leaders Shourie (Arun), Sinha (Yashwant) and Sinha (Shatrughan)," Surjewala said in a tweet.

"Blinded by rage and enmity, what unimaginable depths would you fall to?" he added.

Referring to senior BJP leaders, he said, "Modiji, do tell Gujarat and country about the victims of yours and Amit Shah's 'internal democracy' in BJP, namely Lal Krishna Advani, Keshubhai Patel, Hiren Pandya, Kanshiram Rana, Anandiben Patel, Murli Manohar Joshi, Sanjay Joshi, who were compulsorily lost in the pages of history."

Addressing a poll rally in Gujarat, Modi had mocked the Congress over the upcoming election of its president, alleging that the party had a history of rigging organisational polls.

The charge was raised after a Congress leader from Maharashtra, Shehzad Poonawala, alleged that the Congress organisational poll was "rigged" and state party delegates were not elected.

Earlier in the day, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi targeted Modi on the issue of crimes against women in Gujarat and raised concerns over their safety, even as he accused the PM of merely making promises.

Rahul asked his fifth question in his 'a question a day' series in the run-up to Gujarat assembly elections and demanded answers over the alleged failure of the Modi-led government in fulfilling its promises.

"Women got neither safety, nor education or nutrition, but only exploitation. From Anganwadi to ASHA workers, everyone was disappointed. Only promises were made to the women of Gujarat and it was never their intention to fulfil them," Rahul tweeted.
