Head over heels! Man slips and breaks leg moments before proposing

A MAN literally fell for his girlfriend after slipping and breaking his leg just moments before proposing.

The coastguard praised John Dardis for his 'stoic' nature despite the broken leg

John Dardis planned to get down on bended knee during a romantic walk along a coastal path near Newquay, Cornwall, on Saturday morning.

But he slipped on the wet ground and was unable to move after snapping the lower part of his Fibia.

So John decided to pluck up the courage and propose to Suzannah Newham on the clifftop while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

He decided it would be more romantic than popping the question in his hospital bed.

The bride-to-be said yes and celebrated by posting several pictures of the coastguard as they came to the help the couple on social media.

“Congratulations to you both from all of the team.”

And Mr Dardis later took to Facebook to thank the rescue teams who came to his aid.

He wrote: “Back safe at hotel with cast - broken fibula at ankle end - two attempts to set... ouch!

“Huge thanks to all the crew!"

Mr Dardis thanked the rescue crew for their work in a twitter post

“You were super-efficient and had great banter which has added to our engagement story!”

An air ambulance was scrambled to the couple’s location as they were some distance from the nearest road.

A spokesman said: “The casualty and his partner were located, his ankle was placed in a vacuum splint and he was given pain relief, then lifted over the fence and transported by the Coastguard to the waiting South West Ambulance Service crew at the road.”

Regie Butler, Newquay Coastguard rescue officer, added: “It was an unfortunate accident but John was very stoic. “The best man’s got the best speech to give now.”
