We’re pleased to announce that for #NAMApolicy: Impact of Internet Shutdowns, which is being held on the 6th December, at the India Habitat Centre, Delhi, we’ve got journalists who have faced extensive shutdowns and reported on them, coming to tell us how it impacts their daily lives. These journalists are coming from Darjeeling, Kashmir, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh.

One journalist, from Darjeeling, which had the Internet shut down for over 100 days, said that a hill near Sikkim was nicknamed Jio hill. The reason: Reliance Jio signals from across the border in Sikkim were available on this hill, and people went there just to access the Internet. We have many such stories that you’ll get to hear on the 6th, and following the stories, we’ll have an open discussion with the journalists, where you can ask them questions. The session with the journalists will be moderated by Meghnad Sahasrabhojanee and me.

In addition, Bennett Freeman of GNI (Global Network Initiative) will be joining us, and speaking about GNI’s work with telecom operators across the world to counter network shutdown demands. The session will be moderated by Kim Arora.

If you’re confirmed as a participant for our discussion, please do join us. MediaNama is organizing this with support from Facebook.
