Customs officials have detained a Singapore-bound passenger alongwith 1.5 lakh Saudi Riyals at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital.

Acting on a tip-off, a preventive team of Dhaka Customs House detained Abdur Rahman, 31, from Boarding Bridge area at about 11:30pm on Sunday.

Abdur Rahman, hails from Laxmipur district, was departing for Singapore by a US-Bangla flight.

He was carrying the foreign currency for smuggling these out of the country without customs clearance, said Saidul Islam, assistant commission of Dhaka Customs House.

During the primary interrogation, Abdur Rahman told the customs officials that he was carrying the bag containing the foreign currency at the request of his elder brother M Iliyas.

Iliyas' friend Quader gave the bag to Abdur Rahman saying that someone would collect the bag from Singapore Airport, he added.
