Live Now : Toss won by India (decided to bat)

Highlights

13:06(IST)

4 runs from the Ishant over as he bowls it short and wide and Chandimal cracks into that one. Seeing the ball like a football now these guys and the Indians need to get their act right. Sri Lanka's score reads 229/3 as Chandimal is slowly but surely moving towards a century. Sri Lanka's score reads 229/3

13:02(IST)

1 run from the Shami over now. Things are tightening up from the Indian pacers now as they look to have warmed up well, but the Lankan batsmen are looking good here as they seem to have finally put their hands up. Sri Lanka's score reads 225/3

12:58(IST)

2 runs from the Ishant over as he has bowled a nice line and length. The Indians need to get their act right before it is too late in the day and the advantage shifts to Lanka's side. Sri Lanka's score reads 224/3 after 84 overs. Mathews and Chandimal looking good

12:53(IST)

8 runs from the Shami over as the runs are starting to come with the second new ball for Sri Lanka. Chandimal gets the first boundary off his legs and then square drives the second one as the fielders cannot stop the ball running away. Sri Lanka's score reads 220/3 as Virat Kohli must get his pacers to pitch the ball in the right areas

12:48(IST)

CENTURY NUMBER 8!!! Brilliant knock from the former Lankan skipper Mathews as he has been on the top of his game. 37 innings between century number 7 and 8 and two years. Worth the celebration this one as the dressing room gets up to applaud a brilliant show.

12:44(IST)

DROPPED! Mathews gets a life on 98 as Rohit Sharma drops a simple one at second slip. Ishant Sharma cannot believe his luck as Hayden feels that India need to get their act right in the slip cordon. Lucky escape for the Lankan

12:39(IST)

2 runs from the Jadeja over here as Chandimal picks up a double and then plays out the rest of the over without breaking much of a sweat here. Hayden is of the opinion that the Indians should stick to the old ball if they want to bowl short and try their luck once they get the new ball. Sri Lanka's score reads 208/3

12:38(IST)

1 run from the Ashwin over here as the Indians can now go for the new ball. But looks like Kohli is more than happy to keep going with the old ball for a while as he turns to Jadeja again. Sri Lanka's score reads 206/3 as Mathews is still batting on 98

12:35(IST)

Jadeja bowls another maiden as India need to bowl one more over after this to get the new ball. Jadeja and Ashwin might have not got the wickets, but they have surely built the pressure here. Important choice to make for the Indians if they will take the new ball. Sri Lanka's score reads 205/3

12:31(IST)

2 runs from the Ashwin over now as the Indians are failing to make an impact here. Ashwin and Jadeja are giving it their all, but the end result does not have much to show in return. Kohli is seen having a chat with Shami as the new ball is due after 2 overs. Sri Lanka's score reads 205/3

12:30(IST)

4 runs from the Jadeja over as the pitch is suddenly starting to take some turn and bounce from the rough patches. Jadeja takes the edge of Mathews' bat as he is now batting on 97 as Saha fails to stay low enough and gather the ball here. Sri Lanka's score reads 203/3

12:28(IST)

2 runs from the Ashwin over as the Indians are clearly looking to go through the pace and get the new ball in their hands. Kohli looks to be more confident of Ishant and Shami giving him a breakthrough in this game. Sri Lanka's score reads 199/3 as Mathews is inching closer to his 100.

12:23(IST)

Jadeja bowls another maiden over here as the Indians are clearly looking at piling pressure on the Lankan batsmen. Mathews has been really good so far, but is suddenly looking a bit too defensive in his approach and that could help India's cause here. Sri Lanka's score reads 197/3

12:22(IST)

2 runs from the Ashwin over as the Indians waste a review here as the ball hit Chandimal on the pad and the ball was clearly going down the leg side and that was not a very smart call after the Indians got Dilruwan so beautifully on the second day. Sri Lankas's score reads 197/3. Kohli should have clearly not gone for this one.

12:17(IST)

Jadeja bowls a maiden here as the Indians must look to tighten things up here and ensure that the pressure gets the better of these two experienced campaigners. Sri Lanka's score reads 195/3 with Mathews on 92 and Chandimal on 53. Can the spin duo strike?

12:13(IST)

And the boys are back after the LUNCH break. Ashwin gets the ball first up after the break as Virat Kohli is desperate to get some wickets here and end the resistance shown by the Lankans. 3 runs from the over for the visitors as the score reads 195/3

11:33(IST)

NGT has slammed authorities for holding the India-Sri Lanka cricket match at the Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium in Delhi despite hazardous air quality.

11:33(IST)

LUNCH!!! Brilliant session for the Lankans here as they win this one. No wickets for the Indian bowlers despite them bowling their hearts out. Quality show of batsmanship from both Mathews and Chandimal as the duo have played out everything thrown at them by the Indian bowlers. Sri Lanka's score reads 192/3 with Mathews on 90 and Chandimal on 52.

11:28(IST)

Now a maiden here for Ashwin as he follows up Jadeja's over with another perfect one as the Sri Lankan players have clearly shut shop here. Just one more over in all likelihood before the umpires call for lunch. Sri Lanka's score reads 191/3 with Mathews on 89 and Chandimal on 52

11:25(IST)

Maiden here as Jadeja is bowling a tight line and the field is perfect here as close-in fielders are in place with Kohli looking for one blow before the break. Mathews does go for a false shot, but the ball does not reach the fielder. Sri Lanka's score reads 191/3

11:23(IST)

1 run from the Ashwin over as a leg-slip is put in place to grab onto anything that turns and bounces slightly to take the edge of the bat and flies. But Mathews and Chandimal are not budging here. They have been rock solid here as the score reads 191/3 as Mathews bats on 89 and Chandimal on 52

11:20(IST)

1 solitary run from Jadeja's over as he returns to the crease. A no-ball as the spinner has overstepped again. The Lankans are surely playing for lunch here as we have 11 more minutes to go before the break. Sri Lanka's score reads 190/3 after 67 overs

11:18(IST)

6 runs from the Ashwin over here as Mathews picks another boundary and moves closer to a much-deserved 100. Mathews has batted beautifully today after struggling initially on Sunday. Grinded it out well as the home stretch of the opening session has already begun. Sri Lanka's score reads 189/3

11:14(IST)

16th TEST FIFTY for Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal. Brings it up with a boundary past the backward point fielder. This is his 3rd consecutive 50 in this series and Chandimal has been on the top of his game this morning as Shami gives away 7 runs from the over as around 17 minutes are left for the lunch break. Sri Lanka's score reads 183/3

11:07(IST)

Ashwin is finally introduced into the attack on the third morning by Kohli with just the home stretch left for the first session to end. Just 30 minutes left as Ashwin takes the crease. Mathews and Chandimal bring in the 100-run partnership. This is the first 100-run partnership for Lankans in this series and the score reads 176/3

11:04(IST)

Ishant continues and now 4 runs from this over. Pace from both ends as Kohli wants wickets here. He realises that the Lankans are almost home in the first session without losing a single wicket and that is the perfect start to the day for the visitors. Sri Lanka's score reads 174/3

10:58(IST)

Shami is back at the bowling crease as Kohli is for the first time in the series falling short of ideas here. Shami has been brilliant in the first hour and now gives away 5 from the first over after his return to the bowling crease. Pitches it up and Chandimal drives that beautifully past cover. Sri Lanka's score reads 170/3

10:55(IST)

5 runs from the Ishant over as Mathews decides to finally pull the short one and even though the ball was just at an arm's length from the fielder, there was no stopping that one. The Lankan batsmen have been really determined to do well this morning. Sri Lanka's score reads 165/3

10:48(IST)

1 run from the Jadeja over as the Indians have been trying everything to pick a wicket and put a brake on the partnership between Chandimal and Mathews. But the two pillars of Lankan batting have done really well on the third morning. Kohli even has a chat with Jadeja in-between balls. Sri Lanka's score reads 160/3 after 60 overs

10:46(IST)

The boys are back after the drinks break and Ishant gives away just 2 runs as the Indians have looked to pile the pressure on the Lankan batsmen. Chandimal and Mathews have played out the first hour and time for them to do this for another 45 minutes and they are safe into the lunch break. Sri Lanka's score reads 159/3

10:35(IST)

1 run from the Jadeja over as that is the end of the first hour of play. Time for a drink for the players and the duo of Mathews and Chandimal have actually earned it with a resolute show on the third morning. Mathews’ 70 runs in this innings is the highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batsman in this series; He was dropped on 6 by Kohli. This is also his highest score in his last 9 innings. Sri Lanka's score reads 157/3 after 58 overs

LATEST UPDATES: Mathews and Chandimal have been on the top of their game here and have been batting really well even though the Indian bowlers have bowled their heart out. Virat Kohli had won the toss and decided to bat.

PREVIEW IND vs SL, DAY 3: Smog, Virat Kohli and a late counter attack from Angelo Mathews stood out as the highlight of the second day’s action between India and Sri Lanka in the third Test at the Ferozeshah Kotla in the Capital on Sunday. Not to forget the masks that came out as the Lankans tried to counter the Delhi pollution and kept complaining of the smog troubling the players. In fact, at one point the Lankans had 10 players on the field before a miffed Kohli decided to declare the India innings at 536/7 before removing two Lankan batsmen going into the tea break. But none of this unsporting tactic from the visitors can take away from the fact that Virat Kohli batted for 99 deliveries in the very conditions and was at the non-striker’s end for another 111 deliveries to bring up his sixth double century — joining Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag at the top for most double hundreds for India. He cut, pulled, drove, flicked and even converted ones into twos without bothering about the difficult aerial conditions — once again showing why fitness is such an integral part of even the gentleman’s game in the modern era. In fact, if former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar is to be trusted for his experience, it was the twin breaks in play — with Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal and his boys complaining of the weather conditions — that finally led to Kohli’s (243) dismissal against the run of play when he looked set to score 250. But Kohli and the boys came out all guns blazing and picked two wickets before the tea break as Mohammed Shami removed Dimuth Karunaratne (0) off the first ball of the innings. Dhananjaya’s (1) innings too lasted only 14 balls as the Indians dominated the show. But a counter-attack from Mathews (57*) with Dilruwan Perera (42) for company saw the visitors end the day on 131/3, still trailing by 405 with seven wickets in hand. With Shami and Ishant Sharma spewing fire literally, it was an important innings from Mathews to just wear them out and get the Lankans back in the game. While their backs are still against the wall, it makes for better viewing with skipper Chandimal unbeaten on 25 at stumps.
