Joe Root’s side are in need of a big Test after losing by 10 wickets in Brisbane.
The Test was overshadowed by the Jonny Bairstow headbutt incident which descended into farce as Australia took an early lead in the series.
England have their work cut out as they chase down Australia’s first innings total in Adelaide.
Australia declared on 442-8, while England finished day 2 on 29-1.
Mitchell Starc claimed the wicket of Mark Stoneman, as rain interrupted play.
Due to the rain, the day 3 session will get underway at 3am.

Joe Root's decision to bowl first was a curious one to many expert eyes, but Craig Overton, who took the Smith wicket, said: "This morning it was overcast skies, so we tried to make sure we capitalised on that.
"The first session didn't go to plan, but they didn't get away from us.
"They're not too far ahead of the game, so if we can get early wickets, we're confident.
"It was a challenge for us, but we spoke in the changing room [during a rain break] about the need to get our lengths right, and after that we bowled a lot better."
"But there are certain things people know they should and shouldn't say on a field, and it's important both sides - not just one side, both sides - get that right and have enough respect for each other to not overstep any mark."
England's response, Root hopes, will be to produce a comeback fuelled by runs and wickets to put the sideshow back in its place.
"I think it's important we move on really," he said.
"It's quite an insignificant part of what's such an important series - the cricket should be the thing that's the main focal point.

"Our responsibility as players is to make sure that, for the rest of the series, (cricket) is the stuff that's spoken about - what we do on the field.
"That's got to be our focus, to come back this week and have that individual performance that Steve had in the first game - and have that effect on the series.
"If one of us can do that, it should lead to us winning this week."
Rain delayed the start of day two but when play got underway Stuart Broad bowled Peter Handscomb with a full delivery straight in front of the stumps.
And in the first over after tea Mitchell Starc was bowled by Broad.
