Belagavi: Two and a half years after Belagavi was selected for the Centre's Smart City project, the groundwork finally began on Sunday.

The Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) started the work on demo roads under the area-based development (ABD) plan.

The 705-m long and 24-m wide KPTCL Road, connecting National Highway 4 to Nehru Nagar Main Road, and 950-m long and 24m wide Mandoli Road, connecting Congress Road, will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 22.39 crore according to Smart City standards.

District minister Ramesh Jarkiholi launched the road work. MLA Feroz Sait, DC S Ziaullah, Corporation commissioner and MD of Belagavi Smart City project Shashidhar Kurer were present.

Jarkiholi told reporters that the state government has prioritised the development of Belagavi city. Although the central and state governments are contributing 50-50 share for the project, the state government is spending more funds for development works.

Criticising former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa of making baseless allegations, Jarkiholi said his Parivarthana rally was a flop show and he will soon lose political existence. He said the Congress will regain power in the state. "We will win at least 10 seats from Belagavi in the forthcoming elections. I will take retirement from politics if that feat is not achieved," he said.

UTILITIES GALORE

These roads will have improved carriage way, junctions, footpaths, cycle tracks, storm-water drains, provision for table top crossovers, tactile tiling for visually challenged, thermoplastic marking, utility ducting, laying of underground gas pipeline, OFC and LT electric cabling, smart street furniture and public utilities, avenue plantation, beautification and landscaping, LED street lighting, smart street poles and signage.
