PATNA: Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar said on Sunday the BJP's victory in recently concluded urban local body (ULB) polls in Uttar Pradesh (UP) would serve as an additional booster in Gujarat where the party's win is a foregone conclusion. He also said them party is set to win Himachal Pradesh where elections were held on November 9. The two-day polls in Gujarat are due on December 9 and 14. The election results of the two states would be out on December 18.
"The BJP will win in HP. The party will also win Gujarat. The BJP's sweeping victory in the ULB elections in UP will be additional advantage for the party in Gujarat," Khattar said. The BJP has won 14 of the 16 mayoral seats in UP, with the two others going to the BSP, while the Samajwadi Party and the Congress scored nil.
Khattar, at Patna on Sunday to attend the marriage ceremony of Utkarsh, son of Bihar deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi, made these observations on the sidelines of the conference of Pravasi Haryanavis settled in Bihar which he addressed in the morning. The meet was organized by Haryana government and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
Among others who also addressed it were Bihar industries department principal secretary S Siddharth and his Haryana counterpart Sudhir Rajpal, as well as Prabhat Kumar Sinha and Vinod Kheria from CII, Bihar.
During his interactive session with the 'pravasi' Haryanavis and others, Khattar said the general imposition of total prohibition in Haryana in 1996 led to acute negative side-effects and even the government concerned lost the next election. Therefore, his government has adopted a different policy to control liquor consumption in the state.
The new policy to control liquor consumption is that if a panchayat sarpanch gives in writing that no new licence (theka) should be given for opening any new liquor kiosk under its jurisdiction, the government adheres to it, Khattar said.
He also said the matter of special status category or special package to Bihar was the subject that could be handled by PM Narendra Modi and CM Nitish Kumar.
Earlier, at the conference of the Pravasi Haryanavis, he appealed to all concerned to invest in their choice areas of business activity in Haryana, as the state government has created single window system to give clearance to projects in 45 days.
He said Haryana would remain anywhere between first and fourth in the ease of doing business rankings among all the states in the country, as and when the new rankings are announced.
By improving electricity billing system, the power theft has been overcome and, therefore, the power supply to urban and rural areas has also improved in the state, while high per capita income of the people makes them purchase the products.
Khattar also said Haryana is the second largest foodgrain producer. The government has formed schemes to subsidize purchase of equipment to clear paddy stubbles or to make their uses in power generation to prevent paddy stubble burning and lessen the burden of smog in Delhi and north India. Besides, PM Modi would discuss the matter at his meeting with the CMs of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on Monday.
