Pune: At least 25 workers sleeping inside Golden Bakery at Meenatai Thackarey Vasahat in Gultekdi had a miraculous escape on Monday noon after a fire broke out, once again exposing the bakery employees' vulnerability to blaze.
The workers asleep had completed their shift and a few were working when the fire broke out, prima facie following a short circuit. After spotting smoke billowing out of the bakery, residents rushed to the site and knocked on its doors vehemently.
All the workers walked out of the bakery without any injury. The workers bake bakery products at the facility in the industrial area of Gultekdi in two shifts. Most of them hail from Bhiwandi and stay in a small room on the bakery premises.
Last December, six workers sleeping inside a bakery in Kondhwa died of suffocation after a fire broke out in the facility because of short circuit.
On Monday, the city fire brigade received an emergency call at 12.10pm after the fire broke out at the Gultekdi facility. Five fire tenders and two water tankers rushed to the spot and doused the fire within an hour. The fire tenders continued spraying water for cooling for one more hour.
The bakery's counter is on the other side of the road in the Gultekdi area. The place where the fire broke out was registered in the name of Perfect Bakery, said fire station duty officer Sameer Shaikh.
The fire started in one of the six ovens of the bakery. The diesel supply resumed due to spark in the electric motor, said Shaikh. A worker told TOI, "I woke up only after people knocked on the door. Before we could react to the fire, it engulfed the other two diesel tanks. It was risky to stay inside and we walked out," he said.
The fire brigade officials took utmost precaution while extinguishing the fire. There were chances of the blaze reaching the hutments of the nearby Meena Thackarey Vasahat. Before flames could reach the hutments, the fire brigade officials sprayed water on them.
