Most confident people in Britain REVEALED – they live here and do THIS for a living

BRITAIN’S most confident people have been found to be retired engineers and lawyers living in East Anglia with a car, no mortgage and grandchildren.

Retired people have been singled out as most confident, but why?

According to new research it appears age, marriage and adult children who have left home are key to self-assurance and assertiveness.

Being married can provide emotional stability, owning a home shows financial stability and having a car gives the independence to get out and about.

Not working or commuting takes away a lot of the daily stress which affects younger Britons.

Having grandchildren means people get the benefit of having younger children around without all the responsibility, the study by insurers LV= suggests.

LV= asked 2,000 adults to record the number of days a month where they felt confident, which ranged from less than a day a month to more than three weeks, to measure how well the nation coped with the pressures of modern life.

Older people have lived through the confidence challenges of youth and have had the experience to overcome them

Jo Hemmings, behavioural psychologist

The survey found that among the over-55s, 46 per cent were confident for more than three weeks a month, compared to an average of 24 per cent across all age groups but falling to just 10 per cent of those aged 16-24.

Those who were married were more confident than those who were single as were those who owned a home and had paid off the mortgage while grandparents had higher ratings than parents and those without children.

The East of England, with 32 per cent, was the most confident region while the South West with 18 per cent was the least.

Those who work or have worked in law, engineering and architecture scored highest - 33 per cent in each - while HR workers scored lowest with just 11 per cent saying they spent more than three weeks a month in a confident mood.

For the nation as a whole, health and wealth considerations both help to build confidence.

Three quarters (74 per cent) of respondents say ‘the health of my family’ has a positive impact on their confidence, followed by ‘my own health’ (69 per cent) and ‘financial security for me and my family’ (61 per cent).

Jo Hemmings, behavioural psychologist, said: “Many retirees are able to live more confidently once they have paid off their mortgage and have built up a comfortable pension to live off.

“Added to this, their increased free time allows them to spend more time with family which is another factor that boosts confidence, particularly among parents and grandparents.

“On a broader level, older people have lived through the confidence challenges of youth and have had the experience to overcome them and so have learned to feel happier with their lives."

“It may be also that a peaceful area such as East Anglia – which is away from the strains of major cities – can offer a better quality of life.”

The insurance group published the poll to coincide with the launch of its Green Heart Foundation, a fund to help customers facing problems which could shatter their confidence, from financial to social.

Katie Wadey, of LV=, said: “All of us experience knocks to our confidence from time to time. Sometimes these can be triggered by small things, and other times it can be life events that are much more harrowing.

“Our Green Heart Foundation is one way we provide help and support to people going through some of life’s toughest challenges, and instil confidence when it is needed most.”
