MARGAO: Frantic efforts were made throughout Sunday to rescue the Codli mines worker who is trapped under the ore dump along with the ripper machine that he was operating on Saturday evening.

Sources informed TOI that the day-long rescue efforts to locate the 42-year-old ripper machine operator Manoj Anant Naik of Khandepar-Ponda were unsuccessful. After several attempts made by Naval divers to trace the body of Naik in the mining pit filled with water did not produce any results, a team of 20 personnel from the National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) were summoned to assist the rescue operations at the site. The Naval divers, NDRF team and the Curchorem Fire Services personnel tried their best to retrieve the ripper machine that was buried along with it's operator at one of the Vedanta mines in Codli in Curchorem.

Naik who was operating the ripper machine, was entrusted the task of filling the old mining pit when he lost control with the vehicle tilting into the pit. Fortunately, a driver of a jeep jumped out of his vehicle and saved his life as his jeep, too, collapsed into this deep pit. The pit is claimed to be around 20-25 metres deep with residents now seeking that the mud that was dumped into the pit be excavated onto the rejected ore dumps so as to locate Naik and the missing vehicles. The district administration officials comprising of the Dhabandora deputy collector, mamlatdar and others were present at the site for the second consecutive day as they continued to supervise the rescue operations.

Meanwhile, a press communique issued by the Vedanta Head Corporate Communications Sangeetha Chakravarthy said, "In an unfortunate incident, a worker Naik has been trapped in a slope failure in our Codli mine. The incident happened on December 2 at 4.45 pm. The local district and state administration authorities were informed immediately when the incident occurred. Naik's family comprises his wife, two children and mother. All of us are saddened by the unfortunate mishap. As an organisation that is committed to employee welfare, we are providing all possible support to the family. We have left no stone unturned and continue our rescue efforts working round the clock with the support of the Navy and the National Disaster Management team."
