Manchester United should go for Memphis Depay to solve big Jose Mourinho problem

MANCHESTER UNITED want a winger when the transfer window reopens next month - and Lyon forward Memphis Depay should be considered.

It is nearly a year since Manchester United deemed Memphis surplus to requirements with Jose Mourinho finally giving up on the wing wizard.

Once touted as the heir to Cristiano Ronaldo, big things were expected of the player when he signed from PSV Eindhoven during Louis van Gaal’s time in charge.

Yet after just 18 months of struggling to adjust to English football, he was shipped to Lyon after failing to make the grade.

The Sun say Manchester United want a right winger as Mourinho aims to reel in Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

So why not gamble by bringing Depay back to Old Trafford?

Manchester United should try and sign Memphis Depay from Lyon

Many fans grew tired of the 23-year-old during the end of his days at the club.

He was deemed too cocksure, too confident and too infuriating to carry on their mission back to the higher embers of England’s top flight.

Yet, at Lyon, Depay has shredded his old image to become one of the stars of Ligue 1.

Confidence that was sorely lacking a year ago has returned with a bang. And the Dutchman is now finally resembling the player many expected him to be.

PSG continue to dominate French football with Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe having many fans drooling over their terrific partnership.

But Lyon have a terrific trio of their own.

Depay has slotted into a front three also consisting of Mariano Diaz and Nabil Fekir, prompting Lyon fans to dream of silverware despite PSG’s dominance.

He already has 10 goals from 18 games so far this season.

And he also has seven assists to his name.

United’s attack remains a work in progress despite the many, MANY options Mourinho has at his disposal.

Yet on the right, they are still coming up short.

Mourinho seems reluctant to give Marcus Rashford minutes in that position, with the England star recently being ousted on the left by Anthony Martial.

Juan Mata can perform there but he remains better in the middle, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s days at the club look numbered.

United installed a buy-back clause in Depay’s contract.

And if Mourinho really wants a winger then the Dutchman is certainly worth a punt.
