PANAJI: Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that the state government has decided to increase the garbage handling capacity of the solid waste management plant at Saligao to 250 tonnes per day.
Addressing a function at Taleigao, Parrikar said, "We are increasing the garbage treatment plant capacity to 250 tonnes per day which will take care of Bardez area and Bicholim".
"The garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim will take care of the garbage generated in Panaji and Tiswadi, while the Verna garbage treatment plant will receive garbage generated in Mormugao and Salcete talukas. The Cacora plant will take care of garbage generated in Sanguem and Quepem talukas," Parrikar added.
Parrikar also requested people to stop buying plastic bags to make Goa plastic free. Parrikar said that the government will process the file to set up the garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim by end of this year.
Earlier, Panaji mayor Surendra Furtado said that the state government should begin work of setting up the garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim. Replying to the mayor, Parrikar said, "Both, a bio-digester and the garbage treatment plant, will come up to solve the garbage issues of the state capital."
