PUNE: In a brazen robbery, three unidentified bikeborne men chased an office assistant, dragged him into a narrow lane, kicked and punched him, hit him with a stone and finally snatched his bag containing Rs 3 lakh on Saturday morning. Umesh Shivaji Kadam, the 30-year-old office assistant, sustained serious head injuries in the attack that took place just a few yards away from a nationalised bank on Baner Road.

Chatushrungi police said Kadam was entrusted with the job of depositing cash and cheques, collected at the Wakad-based Surya hospital, in two different banks on Baner Road.

On Saturday morning, Kadam collected the cheques and cash and reached the premises of a nationalized bank to first deposit the cheques. Dayanand Dhome, the senior police inspector of Chatushrungi police, said, "Three suspects, triple riding a motorcycle, came to the spot. We suspect they may have been following Kadam from the hospital."

The trio got off the bike and chased Kadam, who was climbing the stairs of the bank. "The suspects covered his mouth with their hands and dragged him to a narrow lane located adjacent to the bank. The lane remains isolated despite heavy traffic on the Baner Road," Dhome said.

The three men assaulted Kadam at first and then picked up a heavy stone and hit him repeatedly on the head, added the senior inspector. When Kadam finally lost his grip on the bag, the suspects snatched it and fled.

According to the police, the entire robbery has been captured by CCTV cameras. "Kadam has sustained serious head injuries and has been admitted to Surya hospital at Wakad," Dhome said.
