Garhwa woman dies of 'starvation'

RANCHI\GARHWA: A 71-year-old woman, who was allegedly denied ration by the dealer, died of starvation on Friday, neighbours claim.

Premni Kunvar, a resident of Korta village in Garhwa district, about 180km from the state capital, had an Antyodaya Anna Yojna (AAY) card but was denied ration reportedly by the dealer which pushed the family to the brink of starvation, locals claimed.

SDM Pradeep Kumar, who visited Premni's house following an inquiry ordered by Garhwa deputy commissioner Neha Arora, found that there was no grain in her home.

Though the exact cause of death would be known after an autopsy, prima facie the dealer is guilty for having not distributed requisite ration to the beneficiaries within time," he said.

Union minister of state for rural development Ram Kripal Yadav, who was here to review progress of central schemes under his department, said the Centre had made elaborate arrangement for coverage of maximum population under the National Food Security Act.
