Panaji: The state council for educational research and training (SCERT) will hold its annual science talent search examination for the academic year 2017-18 on January 8 for students from Classes VIII to XII. A total of 75 one-time scholarships of Rs 2,500 each will be awarded to the top scorers.

Schools have been asked to recommend the names of eligible students for the examination, to be held in collaboration with the department of science, technology and environment.

General category students who have scored over 60% marks in science and mathematics in their last annual examination will be eligible to appear for the exam. SC/ST category students, however, require 50% marks to qualify.

The test will be of one-and-a-half hours duration and will be conducted only in English. It will be held from 10am to 11.30am on the scheduled date at one location in each taluka.

Fifty scholarships each will be awarded to students from Class VIII, IX and X, of which, 10 will go to SC/ST students and 40 to general category ones. In case the requisite number of SC/ST students do not qualify for the scholarships, the same will be awarded to students from the general category, the circular signed by SCERT director Nagaraj Honnekeri states.

Besides, 25 scholarships each will be granted to students from Class XI and XII. Five scholarships will go to SC/ST students in each class, while the remaining 20 will go to general category students.

"Units prescribed for examination in both the subjects (science and mathematics) are as per the syllabus of the first term of the respective class and the entire syllabus of the previous class," the circular also reads.
