VADODARA: A team of State Monitoring Cell (SMC) arrested two persons and seized Indian Made Foreign Liquor worth Rs 44.78 lakh from a truck near Golden Chowkdi on National Highway-8 late on Friday night.
On the basis of a tip-off, SMC sleuths had been on watch at Golden Chowkdi. When the truck with a registration plate of Patan reached there, cops tried to stop it but it went ahead after which the cops chased it. After some distance from Golden Chowkdi, the truck stopped and one of the accused named Sonu Pathan jumped out of the truck and fled from there. However, the driver of the truck Liaqat Ali Pathan and one Ajeem Pathan were arrested.
When the cops searched the truck, they found 977 cartons filled with 12,869 liquor bottles. When Liaqat and Ajeem were asked about who had loaded the liquor stock, they said that they were asked to take delivery of the truck from Ratlam from other drivers who had got it from Haryana. "At Ratlam, they were told that they will get instructions on their phone from the unidentified owner," said a police official. The accused, who belongs from Rajasthan, were asked to take the truck to Vasad after driving it all the way from Dhulia in Maharashtra via Surat and Vadodara.
Police said that similar to how Liaqat and Ajeem took the keys from Ratlam, they would have been asked to deliver the key at Vasad.
A case of prohibition was registered against Liaqat, Ajeem and Sonu at Harni police station.
The local police have begun investigations by trying to get details of the mobile number from which Liaqat used to get instructions. On Saturday a local court sent the duo to police custody for five days.
