Rajkot: Five persons, most of them BJP workers, were arrested on Sunday for attacking Rajkot (west) Congress candidate Indranil Rajguru's brother Divyanil on Saturday night following row over putting up banners for campaigning. Indranil is contesting against chief minister Vijay Rupani.
Situation had become tense in Rajkot after hundreds of Congress workers had gathered out side Rupani's Rajkot residence demanding an explanation from him over the issue. Indranil and other Congress workers were detained after baton charging by the police to disperse the crowd.
Those arrested by the Gandhigram police include local BJP leader Rajesh Dangar, his aides Ranchod Bharwad, Surendra Chudasama, Sanjay Panchasara and Vitthal Patel all residents of Raiya Road.
According to police complaint filed by the victim Divyanil, the BJP workers had stuck their banners on the Congress candidate Indranil's poster ahead of their rally near Kanhaiya Chowk. When the contractor in-charge of municipal banners in the area when to put up Congress banners there, BJP workers allegedly stopped him and asked him to go away.
The contractor then called up Divyanil, who reached the spot and found Dangar and others preventing the contractor and his men. He had a heated argument with the BJP workers and one of them hit him with a pipe on the head. Divyanil was rushed to a private hospital where doctors said that he had suffered a haemorrhage.
Police said that while five persons were arrested, two others — Shailesh Bharwad and an unidentified persons, were absconding. All seven persons were booked under Indian Penal Cod (IPC) section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).
Meanwhile, the Rajkot city police lodged FIR against Indranil and other Congress leaders like Mitul Donga, Hemant Virada, Bhavesh Borich, Tusahr Nanadani, Jagdish More and 200 others for rioting, unlawful assembly and obstructing police from performing its duty.
