Nagpur: Two persons, including the driver of a Bhandara-bound Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus, were killed while 24 were injured in an accident between Mahalgaon and Gumthala on National Highway-6 on Sunday. The ST bus rammed into the rear of a stationary truck, whose rear tyre had burst, while another car rammed into the rear of the bus.

Traffic on NH-6 remained disrupted for half-an-hour before the situation was brought under control by Mouda police of Nagpur rural and it's traffic wing. Most of the injured were shifted to Mayo Hospital while some opted to go to private clinics. A few of the injured continued their journey in other buses after first aid by local doctors.

The Mouda police and local villagers played a crucial role in rescuing trapped passengers from the heavily damaged bus, and shifting them to Nagpur in public transport. ST officials, including it's technical team, too reached the place. ST officials, who came under fire from kin of the injured at Mayo Hospital, assured some monetary assistance.

Hemant Kapse (30), driver of the ill-fated ST bus, was one of the persons who died. The other to die was 73-year-old Indushan Thakre. At least half-a-dozen passengers in the bus were seriously injured. Six patients were in the surgery ward of Mayo Hospital while three others were in the orthopaedic section.

Seven members of Gabhne, Chopkar and Akhare families were injured, including eight-year-old Piyush, all of whom were heading to Jawahar Nagar in Bhandara district for a funeral.

Conductor of the bus, Bhavrao Nimje (57), said some 40 passengers were in the bus when the incident happened. "I was counting the cash collected from the fare when our bus rammed into the rear of a truck whose tyre had burst earlier. The impact was such that I was thrown forward, with the cash strewn all over the place," he said. "Around Rs1,400 to 1,500 collection was lost," he said. The conductor, who has served ST for 29 years, sustained some injuries in the waist and legs.

It is learnt that the truck was laden with boulders and pebbles used for road construction. After its tyre burst, the truck had rammed into the divider, before coming to a standstill, lying half across the road. Police said the trucker did not take any precaution, like placing warning signs, after the vehicle was stranded in the middle of the road.

Kapse's family sources said he had joined service last December. The victim has a two-and-half-month-old daughter and a son aged two years.

ST sources said the bus had started from Tumsar in Bhandara at 4.45pm on Saturday and went to Katangi in Madhya Pradesh, where it had halted for the night. After leaving Katangi at 6.30am, it had again reached Tumsar at 8.30am and then Bhandara at 9.30am before arriving at Nagpur at 11am. The bus was returning to Tumsar when the incident took place at 11.30am.

An offence of rash and negligible driving, along with causing death due to negligence, was registered against the truck driver and the deceased bus driver at Mouda police station.

Police said the car owner, who had rammed into the ST bus from behind, did not approach police to file an offence. The heavily damaged ST bus was shifted to the Wardhaman Nagar depot while the truck was moved to Mouda police station.
