PANAJI: Social worker Rajan Ghate on Saturday said the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007, and Goa Rules 2009, which requires police officials to visit senior citizens living alone, isn't being implemented. He has requested the government to tighten legislations to ensure the welfare of senior citizens.
In a memorandum submitted to chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday, Ghate asked that senior citizens be allowed to reclaim gifted or transferred properties. "Many senior citizens are being abused by their children, but the hands of the police are tied. The government must bring in an amendment to make offences against them non-bailable offences," he said.
Highlighting the need for a senior citizen's commission in the state to administer, handle and resolve issues on a timely basis, he suggested that the commission also oversee the functioning of the act. He further highlighted the need for a counselling cell, police stations in each district, and an effective helpline for senior citizens. "There is lack of awareness about the present helpline," he alleged.
