Acquaintances more dangerous than strangers in rape cases: NCRB report

Jaipur: Acquaintances proved more dangerous than strangers for girls and women in rape cases in Rajasthan. This was revealed by the figures of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Likewise, girls and women were also raped by their neighbours.

According to the NCRB data, out of the total 3,656 rape cases, the number of cases in which the accused were known to the rape survivors were 3,626 which is almost 90 percent. It is further stated that out of the total number of rape cases, in 147 cases the accused were from the family of the rape survivors.

"These 147 were either their grandfathers, fathers, brothers or even sons, a very alarming thing. Also, in most of these cases the accused is known to her. That also suggests that strangers are not dangerous for girls and women in Rajasthan," said a senior police officer at the police headquarters on Sunday.

It was also found in the NCRB figures that out of the total number of cases 269 were raped by relatives (other than grandfather, father, brother and son). "In the category in which girls and women are raped by their acquaintances Rajasthan also has the maximum number of cases. That means for women and girls in Rajasthan a known person proved more dangerous than strangers," said an officer.

However, officials of SOG who had busted gangs involved in wrongly implicating people in rape cases have a different opinion. "Most of them were known, this clearly means that the accused were wrongly implicated when they refused to be intimidated by extortion gangs. We busted a gang in 2016 which had white-collared people working together. These gangs had girls and women, lawyers, journalists and others who used to create a scenario where a man was lured by the women in their gang. Thereafter, they used to ask for some money and if they were denied, the gang used to implicate these people in rape cases," said Dinesh MN, inspector general of police, SOG.
