A retired Army officer today joined the opposition here, a party spokesperson said.

Brigadier (Retd) K K Lakhanpal was welcomed into the party fold by NC president Farooq Abdullah at a function at Sher-e-Kashmir Bhavan, the spokesperson said.

Abdullah said Lakhanpal would be entrusted with the crucial assignment of looking after the affairs of ex- servicemen and war-widows, whose problems are manifold.

"The will play a pro-active role in seeking resolution of the problems confronted to ex- servicemen," Abdullah said and hoped that a team led by Lakhanpal would coordinate all their issues.

He said with the joining of Lakhanpal, the party would be further strengthened at the grassroots level and play its designated role.

"The is the natural destination for all those who want to serve the state and its people," Abdullah said.
