'EU is breaching Article 50!' Ex-Tory leader lambasts bloc for 'unlawfully' halting Brexit
LORD Howard lambasted European Union chiefs for “unlawfully” halting Brexit saying they are in breach of Article 50.
The former Conservative party leader said the European Union was breaking the rules of Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and it was having an unfair impact on Brexit.
But, speaking on Sunday Politics, on the BBC, Michael Howard added he was confident negotiations would progress to phase two - when future trade between the UK and Brussels will be discussed.
Lord Howard said: “There’s a huge amount of posturing going on, which there always is in negotiations and indeed the approach they’ve chosen, the European Union, is actually in breach of Article 50.
“Article 50 says that the arrangements for the departure of a member state have to take into account the future relationship of that state with the European Union.

“You can’t take something into account if you’re not prepared to talk about it.
“So they’re in breach of Article 50.
“I am confident, I think we will move forward to the next phase. I hope we will get an agreement this month and then we can start talking Turkey.”
Nigel Farage has accused Prime Minister Theresa May of "selling out" to the European Union after it was reported she had upped her offer for a Brexit divorce bill by more than £20bn.
The staunch pro-Brexit politician slammed Mrs May after rumours claimed the PM planned to double her offer for a divorce bill to the EU.
Speaking on his LBC show, Mr Farage said: "None of us has been shown any figure of what the Government thinks we owe the European Union or indeed what the European Union owes us.
"This is weakness by the British Government, it’s sell-out and it’s also a reluctance. They were never ever going to walk away from this negotiating table and yet they could have done."
