SRIKAKULAM: The police arrested a woman on charge of selling children during a raid on her house in Chittaranjan street of Srikakulam on Saturday and rescued two baby girls.
Acting on credible information that Andhravarapu Radha, a resident of Chittaranjan Street, was involved in selling children for money, the integrated child protection officials and police conducted a week-long recce near her house.
According to the district child protection officer KV Ramana, the woman had brought two baby girls in the age group of two to four months from Visakhapatnam recently. "On Saturday, a child protection official posing as a buyer approached the woman and the latter demanded `8 lakh for the boy and `6 lakh for the girl. She also wanted more than half of the amount to be paid in advance," said KV Ramana.
The police raided the house when the woman was settling the deal with the child protection official masquerading as the buyer and arrested her. "Seeing the police, the woman claimed that she was the surrogate mother of the children whom she delivered at a clinic in Vizag. But, she failed to produce any proof," II-Town SI Ravi Kumar told TNIE. The rescued children have been shifted to Arasavalli Sishugruha.
