The Reds went into the game yesterday with a defensive crisis.

Neither Joe Gomez or Ragnar Klavan could start due to illness, while Joel Matip is out injured.

As a result, Wijnaldum and Emre Can both featured in a back three alongside Dejan Lovren.

But despite the changes, Liverpool did what their rivals could not and smashed through Brighton.

Jurgen Klopp’s side thumped Brighton 5-1 at the Amex Stadium.

Manchester United only beat Chis Hughton’s men 1-0 at Old Trafford last weekend.

“We have been working hard and trying to be more concentrated”

Elsewhere, Arsenal and Manchester City recorded just 2-0 victories, showing Liverpool did well to repeatedly break Brighton down.

“I’m really pleased because if you look at the games they have played in the Premier League against the bigger teams they didn’t concede that many goals,” Wijnaldum told Liverpool’s official website.

“We did well and we scored from almost all of the chances we created and that’s a good thing against a team that doesn’t concede a lot of goals.

“We have been working hard and trying to be more concentrated.

“If a team wants to beat us they have to do their best - not that we want to give them that [opportunity].”

Liverpool’s win moved them up to fourth in the table, with Klopp’s team now the third-highest scorers.

Up next for the Reds in the Premier League is the Merseyside derby when Everton visit Anfield next Sunday (2.15pm).
