Mapusa: Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has decided to keep the renovation and upgrade plan of the municipal market open for public viewing at its office.

During a review meeting in October this year, chief minister Manohar Parrikar had given the in-principal approval for the renovation and upgrade of the municipal market (old block).

The project, which will be taken up in two phases, without disturbing the existing market structure, will have CCTV surveillance, fire hydrant system, underground cabling, toilets, water and ATM facilities and solar panels. The entire market will be covered and have three ring roads free from vendors. Phase I of the work will cost Rs 19.6 crore, while the second phase will cost Rs 17 crore.

MMC has resolved to hold a special council meeting on December 8 to decide over the project. Councillors have demanded that approval for the renovation project be taken from all stakeholders at the earliest.

The chief minister has said a special task force will be constituted for the project. It will also have an independent financial backup under the infrastructure component of the government, he said. The special task force will be headed by the MMC chairperson and include representatives of other departments.
