Man Utd news: Borussia Dortmund eye Henrikh Mkhitaryan with Mesut Ozil as replacement

MANCHESTER UNITED could sell Henrikh Mkhitaryan back to Borussia Dortmund, with Mesut Ozil filling his place at Old Trafford, according to reports.

Manchester United bought Mkhitaryan for £26million back in the summer of 2016.

He endured a mixed first season at the club and this term has been equally as unconvincing.

The Armenia international has scored just three goals all season and his assists have recently dried up.

Mkhitaryan has not started any of United’s last five games.

The impressive form of Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial has kept Mkhitaryan on the bench, with Marcus Rashford also struggling for minutes.

And the Daily Star Sunday claim Mkhitaryan’s time at United could be coming to an end.

According to the report, Dortmund would jump at the chance to re-sign their former player maker.

Discussing after United’s midweek win over Watford, club legend Paul Scholes said: “Maybe they [his teammates] don't trust him [Lingard] enough.

"He's not the big name of a Mkhitaryan or somebody like that. He's got that ability. He's got the same level of ability as Mkhitaryan.

Manchester United are interested in signing Arsenal star Mesut Ozil

"He can score goals, he can make goals. What's his best position?

"He has to establish himself now, he has to be more consistent, he has to produce more performances like that to make him a real first team player.

“I don't think he's ever gone on from that bit-part player yet - now he needs to."

United are expected to dip into the transfer market in January and could raise cash for new signings by offloading Mkhitaryan.

Mourinho himself is interested in landing Arsenal star Mesut Ozil on a free transfer in the summer.

Ozil is out of contract when the season ends and United are frontrunners to sign him.
