NEW DELHI: The Maharashtra unit of the BJP was left red-faced when on Sunday a tweet panning the BJP-led state government over unemployment in the state appeared on its official Twitter handle. BJP later claimed that the account was hacked.
A screengrab of the tweet, which has now been deleted, was posted on Twitter by Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam who said that it exposed the clamour within the BJP.
The now-deleted tweet also tagged several Congress offices in the state as well as Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The tweet was in response to media reports announcing the state government's decision to scale down the workforce by 30 percent by the end of the year.
The proposed cut was announced to counter the increase in expenditure following the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission.
The party is presuming it to be the work of a hacker and has referred the matter for investigation.
"We feel the state BJP unit's Twitter handle was hacked to post this message. We have asked the Cyber Crime cell of the Mumbai Police to investigate the matter," state BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye told PTI.
Party member Priti Gandhi suspects that the tweet was posted "to score political brownie points".
