Coimbatore: A 29-year-old goldsmith was stabbed to death in a drunken brawl at TK Street here on Saturday night. Police have arrested the accused.
The deceased, Devadoss, was working in a gold smithery belonging to Manikandan at TK Street for the last one and a half years. He was staying in a rental room. M Maheswaran, 49, a native of Tirunelveli, was working in a hardware shop at TK Nagar and stayed in a rental room next to Devadoss's room. Both of them often consumed liquor and fought with each other.
Meanwhile, Maheswaran brought an indigenous breed puppy a few months ago and kept the puppy in the hall of the commercial complex. The puppy often disturbed Devadoss while he was sleeping in his room.
Maheswaran had bought liquor and fish fry and kept them at his rental room. Both were missing from his room on Saturday evening and he suspected that Devadoss might have stolen them. An argument broke out between Devadoss and Maheswaran, who was drunk. In a fit of rage, Maheswaran stabbed Devadoss on his neck and abdomen. Devadoss died on the spot. The Variety Hall Road police sent the body to the CMCH for postmortem.
Police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC and arrested Maheswaran who was later remanded in judicial custody.
