Palmetto bicyclist struck and killed by car

MANATEE COUNTY — A Palmetto man died Saturday morning when his bicycle was struck by a car that left the scene of the accident, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. Killed in the accident was Gary Allen Kittel, 74, of Palmetto.

According to reports, about 9:30 a.m. Saturday Kittel was riding his bicycle south on the shoulder of U.S. 41, south of Buckeye Road. A Nissan Murano, also traveling south on the highway in the outside lane, moved over onto the shoulder and struck Kittel from behind.

After the impact, the car left the scene of the accident but was later located by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. Its driver, Clarence Greene Jr., 66, of Palmetto was arrested.

Kittel was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Charges are pending in the incident.
