Akhilesh Yadav celebrates the birthday of ‘the demonetisation baby’, ‘khazanchi’

NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday celebrated the first birthday of a boy who was born while his mother was standing in a bank queue in Kanpur last year following demonetisation.

The former chief minister took the occasion to criticise the BJP-led government for its failure to help people such as the boy's family who continues to live in abject poverty, despite the promises.

Yadav was referring to Narendra Modi's promise of depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of every citizen of the country when he was campaigning for the general elections in 2014.

He said that the family, whose bank accounts are still empty, is waiting for the Prime Minister to fulfil his promise.

The boy's parents, to signify the extraordinary circumstances surrounding his birth, had named him "khazanchi", a Hindi word for cashier.

Following his birth, the then CM of the state Akhilesh Yadav announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for his parents.

Last month, a Times of India report had highlighted the plight of the family who were living in dismal conditions despite receiving a slew of benefits from the government.

On December 2, 2016, Khazanchi was born on the stairs of a bank in Kanpur after his mother Sarvesha Devi waited for over five hours to collect cash following demonetisation.

Khazanchi's father had died of tuberculosis six months before his birth, while his mother was afflicted by polio during her childhood and had given birth to four children before Khazanchi.
