BERHAMPUR: Road communication in the Maoist-hit areas of the southern Odisha districts was affected as CPI (Maoist) began observing People's Liberal Guerilla Army (PLGA) week from Saturday.

The state-owned Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) has suspended its bus service in all southern Odisha districts but private owners are running their buses as usual.

"We have decided not to operate buses in the Maoist-hit districts from December 2 to 8," said the manager of OSRTC's Berhampur division, A K Mishra. As many as 47 buses on different routes will be off the roads, he said.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in Kandhamal and Gajapati districts. "We have alerted the forces. The combing operation has been intensified in Kandhamal district while vehicle checking is being done in some strategic locations," said SP (Kandhamal) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra.

Similarly, SP (Gajapati) A K Das said a combing operation was on in the Left-Wing Extremism affected areas such as Adava and Mohana. "No untoward incident was reported from any part of of the district," Das said.

Earlier, the rebels obstructed the roads by felling trees near Kurtamagarh under Kandhamal district's Tumudibandh police station. In a banner, they urged the people to observe the PLGA week.

The outlawed outfit generally concentrates on fresh recruitment during the week. They also pay tribute to slain cadres.
