KANPUR: When ward no. 43 was declared reserved for women, sitting corporator Raj Kishore Yadav, a bachelor, must have been worried. However, an idea that he successfully acted on ensured that the seat stayed in the family.

All set to get married on November 23, Yadav (30) decided to advance his wedding date so that he could field his wife from the seat.

Now, 28-year-old Neha Yadav, who got married to Kishore on October 31, has won the seat to become the corporator of Nawabganj Vikasnagar ward.

Contesting on an SP ticket, she beat Independent candidate Shabana Begum by 800 votes.

A postgraduate from Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj University, she visited several homes in Nawabganj Vikasnagar ward with her husband and thanked voters for their support.

"It is my wedding gift to him," she said, dressed in bridal attire.

"After taking a week's break, we will go on our honeymoon," Yadav said.
