Drunk truck driver runs over, kills cop on duty

A 45-year-old traffic constable was killed after he tried to stop a drunk truck driver from crossing a barricaded road in Outer Delhi’s Alipur on Thursday evening. The deceased constable has been identified as Yashveer Singh.

According to a senior police officer of the Rohini district, the incident happened on Thursday evening at the NH 1 when the Narela traffic circle officers Yashveer Singh and Shrawan Meena were on duty regarding the traffic rush on GT Karnal Road due to weddings.

“The traffic cops had placed diversions at the Shani temple red light towards Bhaktawarpur road. Traffic Constable Yashveer Singh tried to stop the truck driver when he tried to cross the diversion.  But the driver, allegedly in an inebriated state, ran over Singh and fled,” said the senior police officer.

Shrawan Meena gave a chase to the errant driver for 1.5 kilometres and managed to arrest him.

In the meantime, staff from a private farmhouse informed the local police, who rushed Singh to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The accused driver has been identified as Veeru a native of Bihar. he has been sent to judicial custody.

Police said they have registered a case at Narela police station against the errant truck driver. Further investigation is on.
