Meghan Markle will be a royal asset when flying the fashion flag, says ANTONIA KRASKOWSKI

ON her first public engagement as a royal bride-to-be, Meghan Markle opted for a stylish yet cosy ensemble as she accompanied Prince Harry on a walkabout in Nottingham.

Clearly she was ready for our chilly climes after having spent years enduring Toronto winters and decided to wrap up for the occasion.

Her choice of an ankle length navy military style coat from Canadian outerwear specialist Mackage was a smart move against the bracing chill of Northern England.

With similar styles by the brand retailing at $750 (approximately £630), this was clearly an investment piece and one that she has worn before.

Underneath, her classic combination of a cotton midi full skirt from Joseph (£595) and Wolford Colorado polo neck body (£140) teamed with black suede knee high boots showed off her innate sense of style.

Whatever Meghan wears is eagerly snapped up by her fans with key pieces selling out quickly

She chose to add a quirky detail to an otherwise sartorially safe outfit with a top handle bag (£145) from Strathberry, a Scottish brand founded in 2013 that has been a hit with young stylish women in the know.

Over the last few months it has become clear that Meghan favours a classic silhouette with a twist, choosing to invest in pricier designer pieces that are made to last with a wardrobe featuring brands from both sides of the Atlantic.

While her soon-to-be sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge is mainly seen wearing British brands from both the catwalk and the high street, it remains to be seen whether Meghan will follow her lead.

However Ms Markle has recently been spotted in British-based designers Erdem, Burberry and Mulberry, all of which are popular with Catherine.

It seems that the actress has the Midas touch when it comes to her carefully curated wardrobe.

With several social media accounts already dedicated to the actress’ style, whatever Meghan wears is eagerly snapped up by her fans with key pieces selling out quickly.

Her off-duty outfits of blue jeans, heels and white shirts teamed with biker jackets and cross body bags echo her relaxed all-American girl persona that is regularly replicated by her followers keen for a bit of the star’s glamour to rub off on them.

But of course, with a royal wedding on the horizon the biggest question is which designer will be tasked with creating the most hotly anticipated dress of 2018.

While the Duchess of Cambridge chose a traditional lace Alexander McQueen gown, many fashion insiders are wondering if Meghan will go for a similar grand style or opt for a sleeker, modern design in keeping with her personal style.

Fashion insiders are also eagerly speculating on who will make the dress - will the newest royal bride-to-be chose a renowned British brand such as Amanda Wakeley, Jenny Packham or Temperley London or go for an American designer such as Vera Wang or Oscar De La Renta.

With yet another stylish young woman joining the Royal Family, she can only be an asset when it comes to flying the flag for fashion.
