CHANDIGARH: Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) Adarsh Sein Anand passed away on Friday after prolonged illness. He was 81 years old. Anad was the 29th CJI and served from October 10, 1998 to October 31, 2001.
As a mark of respect to the departed soul, the work at the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday afternoon remained suspended.
Born in 1936, CJI Anand had also practised as a lawyer at Chandigarh before his elevation as the judge. He had done his education from Jammu and Kashmir and started his practice at the high court in Chandigarh in 1964.
In 1976, he became a permanent judge of the Jammu and Kashmir high court. Before his elevation to Supreme Court, Justice Anand had also served in the Madras high court. His daughter, Munisha Gandhi is a senior advocate at the Punjab and Haryana high court. His cremation would take place on Sunday in Delhi.
