DUBAI: A man, who threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend unless she forfeited all the gifts he had given her, must see out his three-month-prison term plus deportation.
The Asian man, 23, misused his phone to text a threatening message to the mother of his Chinese ex-girlfriend, 27, using the iMessage instant messaging service on May 28.
The Criminal Court sentenced him to three months in the dock plus deportation and ordered that his mobile phone be confiscated. The Appeals Court has upheld the punishment.
In Rashidiyah Police Station records, she explained that she was in a relationship with him for around two years until they broke up in January following a spate of misunderstandings.
He started harassing her and causing problems. “In March he demanded me to pay the value of all the gifts he had offered me…In May he came to my apartment and repeatedly contacted me.
“I declined to answer. He several times rang the bell. I refused to open…In the evening he sent a message to my mother insulting me and threatening to kill me. I reported him to the police.”
The message allegedly read that “If she (the victim) does not solve this matter by tomorrow, she will be killed. (And) I will kill you.” He reportedly confessed before police and prosecutors.
However, during court questioning he denied and his lawyer argued that the whole case stemmed from an earlier dispute over which she revengefully decided to frame him.
“She rented out his apartment but declined to give him the sum she collected. She also took his mother’s car to rent it out but then did the same and refused to hand over the due sums.”
“Whenever he contacted her demanding the money, she strived to blackmail him into relinquishing his right by framing him,” claimed the lawyer.
