AHMEDABAD: Union textiles minister Smriti Irani said on Friday that Rahul Gandhi was visiting Gujarat temples to garner the majority community's votes.

"Baba is bowing in each and every temple of Gujarat. He is attempting to win votes on the pretext of paying obeisance to deities," Irani said. "Rahul, you did not spare the masses; at least spare the Gods. Look at the miracle of God: Gandhi went to offer prayers to Somnath Dada and the truth finally came out," she said.

Irani was speaking at a public meeting after the inauguration of the poll office of BJP candidate Suresh Patel in Maninagar, a constituency held thrice by Narendra Modi. After becoming PM, Modi relinquished the constituency.

"Congress leaders are screaming baba is a 'janeu dhari' (Hindu who wears the sacred thread). The man has said Hindus are terrorists. Now, Congress leaders are so desperate to win Gujarat polls that they had to scream that Gandhi is a Hindu. The person who silently witnessed cows being slaughtered by his workers is taking pride in being a Hindu."
