Woods has started just three events since August 2015 and withdrew from his most recent tournament in February in Dubai after an opening 77.
The 14-time major winner subsequently underwent spinal fusion surgery in April, his fourth back operation in the space of three years, but for the second year in succession has returned to action in the Bahamas.
Former world number one Woods is currently ranked 1,199th and began the week a 40/1 outsider in the 18-man field, in what is not an official PGA Tour event but does carry significant world ranking points.
But he started his second round with a bang and an eagle on the ninth had him in the outright lead for a spell.

His back nine wasn't quite as strong but he managed to fend off a few wobbles to shoot four under and be seven under overhaul.
He sits tied for third after two rounds and was pleased with his first two days back in competitive golf.
“It was successful as I went out there on the front nine and shot 31, and I improved that much better than my play yesterday.
“The only thing where I really struggled was getting the speed of the greens as I did struggle reading their speed as most of the putts I missed went past the hole but delighted to clean-up my driving.
“The other thing that is pleasing is how my body performed as I went out there again today being able to play to my full expectations so my body is good.”
