Annisul laid to rest

DHAKA: Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq was buried at the Banani graveyard in the city in the evening on Saturday (December 02).

He was buried at about 5:20 pm beside the grave of his mother and the grave of son Mohammad Sharful Haq.

Annisul’s wife Rubana Huq, son Navidul Huq, two daughters- Wamiq Umaira Huq and Tanisha Fariamaan Huq, younger brother and Chief of Bangladesh Army General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq and other relatives were present during the burial.

Before the burial, Annisul Huq’s namaz-e-janaza was held the Army Stadium after Asr prayers.

Ministers, leaders of different political parties, noted citizens, high officials, officials of the DNCC and the DSCC and city dwellers joined the namaz-e-janaza. Among them, finance minister AMA Muhith, Awami League general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader, BNP standing committee member Barrister Moudud Ahmed, inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haq, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Asaduzzaman Mia.

The body of Annisul Huq was taken to the Army Stadium from his Banani residence in the afternoon. The people of all walks of lives paid their last respect to the mayor before the namaz-e-janaza. His body was covered with national flag and the flag of DNCC.

President’s military secretary Maj Gen Sarwar Hossain on behalf of the president paid respect to Annisul at about 3:10 pm. At the time, Prime Minister’s military secretary Mohammad Joynul Abedin on behalf of the PM also paid homage to the deceased mayor.  

Annisul Huq died in a London hospital on Thursday (November 30) at the age of 65. In July, he was admitted to the hospital. He was diagnosed with cerebral vasculitis.

A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines carrying the body of the mayor reached the the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at noon on Saturday (December 02).

General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq received the body at the airport. Awami League leaders, including Obaidul Quader, and senior officials of the city corporation were present at the time.

From the airport, Annisul Haq’s body was taken to his Banani residence.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the residence to pay her last respect to the mayor. She also consoled his family members and prayed for salvation of the departed soul.  

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Awami League senior leader and commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, the party’s general secretary and road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader were also present at the time, among others.

Annisul Huq was born on October 27 in 1952 at Sonapur village at Sonagazi in Feni to Shariful Huq and Rowshan Ara Huq.

He passed SSC from Dinajpur Zilla School in 1970. He completed his Bachelor degree from the University of Rajshahi and had a masters in economics from the University of Chittagong.

Annisul’s father was an official of the Bangladesh Ansar. His brother General Abu Belal Mohammad Shafiul Huq is the current chief of Bangladesh Army. Annisul was married to Rubana Huq. They have three children.

The deceased mayor was a regular host on Bangladesh Television in the early 1980s.

He had performed duty as president of several apex bodies, including the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Federation of the Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) and Independent Power Producers Association.

He established his own business, Mohammadi Group in 1986. The Group has an independent TV Channel named Nagorik TV.

Annisul Huq was elected the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation on ticket of Awami League in 2015.

As mayor, he promised to build Dhaka into a clean, green and safe city. He also promised to reduce corruption among governmental employees.
