Jaipur: The crime data released by the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) indicates that the menace of auto theft continues to haunt Rajasthan. The NCRB numbers show that the state is the fourth in registering most number of such thefts in the country.
As per the data on auto thefts, the state police registered 17,544 cases in 2016. But the police can take heart in the fact the number has dipped compared to 2015. "In 2015, we registered about 18,141 cases of auto theft. There is a decline of 597 cases, which indicates that the state police are curbing vehicle lifters. Unlike other states like UP where the graph is on the rise, we have managed to improve," said the official.
The auto theft list is topped by Delhi (3,8,644), followed by Uttar Pradesh (34,480) and Maharashtra (22,435). "Rajasthan shares a long inter-state border with states like Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. In Rajasthan itself, we have gangs that specialise in vehicle lifting," said an official.
According to police, in most cases, gangs followed the modus operandi of breaking ignition keys with the help of 'master keys'.
"These 'master keys' are mostly home-made and come with a strong handle. Once the key is put into the navigation slot, they twist it with force to break the interlocking," an official said.
In Jaipur, gangs mostly target bikes with an engine ranging from 125cc (cubic centimetres) to 150cc. Most of the bikes stolen from Jaipur are sold at illegal markets near Dausa and Sawai Madhopur. They reportedly earn anywhere between Rs 5,000 to 15,000 on one four-gear bike in the illegal market.
"Sometimes these bikes are dismantled and parts are sold separately," said the official.
