Samuel Berkley died in hospital after being found yesterday evening

The boy, who died in hospital today, has been identified as "fun, outgoing and friendly" Samuel Berkley.

His family said "nothing will replace him" in an emotional tribute issued through Greater Manchester Police this afternoon.

A police statement said: “His family said they are completely heartbroken by their loss and although nothing will ever replace losing Sam they hope everyone remembers him for the fun, outgoing and friendly boy he will always be."

Police believe the teenager, who was found on the eastbound stretch at junction 3 at 5.25pm yesterday, was involved in a collision with a car.

Officers say he sustained "unsurvivable" injuries. He was taken to hospital but died tiday, Greater Manchester Police said.

They added the car involved in the collision was a grey convertible BMW which was travelling eastbound.

Sergeant Lee Westhead said: "My thoughts are with the victim's family who are being looked after by specially trained officers at this difficult time.

"Whilst we work to uncover how this has happened and piece together the moments before the collision, I am asking the public to help in any way that they can.

"If you were in the area at approximately 5.25pm on December 1 and saw a pedestrian on the motorway, or have dashcam images, please get in touch and share this information."

Police earlier said it was unclear whether the boy was hit by a car or it could be that the child fell from a bridge or a moving vehicle.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting the reference number 1482 of 01/12/17.
