Cold snap to end this weekend with temperatures hitting DOUBLE FIGURES

BRITS will wake up to warmer temperatures this weekend days after the Big Freeze sent the mercury plummeting.

The winter warmer will be welcomed by millions across the UK following a biting cold snap earlier this week.

A Met Office spokeswoman said milder temperatures would settle in most areas of the country.

Forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: “We’ve got a warm front coming in with a lot of clouds coming in and that is really keeping the temperatures in.

“We’re looking at highs of 10C on Saturday and 11C, maybe 12C for Sunday. There will be a lot of clouds, but there may be some sunny spells as well.”

While the weekend will be a welcome break from the late November freeze this winter is set to be the coldest in five years.

Meteorologists told Daily Star Online the cold snap will bite back with a vengeance until at least Christmas.

Temperatures could plunge as low as -12C across the UK – even in southern England – throughout December, according to the Weather Company and Weather Outlook.

The Met office said temperatures will be colder-than-average in the run up to Christmas Day and may last until many weeks later.

John Hammond, founder of the digital weather service Weathertrending, said the icy conditions will be a “reality check” after last year’s relatively mild December.

He said: “Last December set the bar pretty high – it was positively springlike.

“By contrast this year, winds from the Arctic will bring a reality check.

“Temperatures will often be close to freezing, and some severe frosts are possible at night.”
