New Delhi/Lucknow: BJP on Friday surged ahead of its rivals, leading on 14 of the 16 mayoral seats and winning 9 seats in Uttar Pradesh civic polls 2017 that were held in three phases. BSP’s Mayor candidate won in Aligarh. The counting of ballots for all the 652 urban local bodies began at 8am today. The civic polls are being seen as a referendum of Yogi Adityanath government’s performance in the past seven months. Polling was held for 16 nagar nigams, 198 nagar palika parishads and 438 nagar panchayats with an average turnout of all the three phases estimated at 52.5% of the 3.32 crore voters. The BJP had won 10 out of 12 mayoral seats in 2012. Here are the latest updates from UP civic poll results:
5.02 pm IST BJP wins 9 Mayor seats, BSP wins 1According to results available on the website of Uttar Pradesh Election Commission, nine BJP candidates have been elected to the Mayor’s office in Ayodhya, Gorakhpur, Mathura, Varanasi, Jhansi, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Firozabad, Bareilly. BSP candidate Mohammed Fukran won in Aligarh.
4.32 pm IST Ayodhya gets its first mayor, BJP’s Rishikesh Upadhayay winsBJP’s Rishikesh Upadhayay has been elected as the first mayor of Ayodhya. Upadhyay defeated SP’s Gulshan Bindu by 3,601 votes. Upadhyay got 44,642 votes (44.9%), while Bindu was close with 41,041 votes. BSP’s Girish Chandra got 6,033 votes, while Shailendra Mani of the Congress polled 3,601 votes. AAP’s candidate Sarvesh Kumar Verma got 1,180 votes. The Adityanath government had decided to constitute municipal corporations for Ayodhya and Mathura-Vrindavan during its initial days in power. Ayodhya went to polls on November 22 in the first phase of the civic polls and saw a poll percentage of 49.98, while the Faizabad district saw a 54.08%turnout. (PTI)
