PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds Gets Two Mobile Games From Tencent

Highlights

  • PUBG's Mainland China debut on mobile is sooner than expected
  • One of the games offers a different take from its PC counterpart
  • No release date outside of China has been announced

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) has two mobile games in the works. One of them is developed by Tencent's Timi Studio. It has naval battles (something the PC games does not have) and sports a more arcade-styled aesthetic and feel. The second game is developed by Lightspeed and Quantum Studios, another Tencent entity which mirrors the gameplay and look of the PC game closely. Both games are being made in Unreal Engine 4 and were revealed, complete with trailers that can be seen on Weibo.

No release for either PUBG mobile game has been given, though Tencent has said in the past that they would be available "soon". Its interesting to see how far ahead Tencent is after an initial announcement earlier this week. And while it's unknown if we'll see either game outside of China, non-Windows PC owners have PUBG to look forward to on the Xbox One from December 12.

Earlier in the week Gadgets 360 reported that Tencent was planning to bring PUBG to mobile for the Mainland China market. According to a post by Tencent, development on the mobile version of PUBG is “ongoing smoothly”.

Would you play PUBG on mobile devices? Or do you think the concept and general gameplay elements would be stretched too thin to be of any use on PCs and consoles? Let us know in the comments.
