GURGAON: In a new twist to the MCG property tax evasion scam, the civic body has found out that a few of its employees had floated a fake website to lure people to get their taxes reduced.

These employees forged the signatures of senior MCG officials for this purpose, thus causing a loss of at least Rs 5 crore to the corporation. Police complaints were filed in August and an investigation is currently underway.

The alleged scam came to light in August this year when an FIR was filed at Sadar police station, following a complaint by a zonal taxation officer of the MCG, in which initially six properties were mentioned for alleged tax evasion. Later, seven more properties were included in the complaint and another FIR was lodged at at DLF-2 police station. Preliminary probe suggested these frauds took place between August 2015 and April 2017.

"We have found out that three employees had made changes in the property tax amount for 95 properties. These employees forged the signatures of senior officials by taking other signed documents and scanning and photocopying these documents," MCG commissioner V Umashankar told TOI on Thursday.

Talking about the investigation, the MCG commissioner said the police were working on the case. However on the corporation's front, "we have found out the property owners who were party to the frauds and have started recovering the money from these persons," he said.

Umashankar said some of the employees involved in the scam were removed from the corporation last year itself. "And necessary provisions have been made to ensure that similar transactions do not take place again," he added.

When contacted, Gurgaon police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar said, "The matter is under investigation and I will not be able to make any further comment at this moment."
