PUNE: A five-year-old doe from the sambar family of deer died after she was hit by an unidentified vehicle at Pathargaon on the old Pune-Mumbai Highway around 11pm on Wednesday.

The forest department launched investigations after it received information from Khamgaon police chowkey under Vadgaon Maval police station. Somnath Takawale, range forest officer (Vadgaon Maval range), told TOI on Thursday that the doe was standing along the road when she was hit by a speeding vehicle. The doe died instantly and the driver fled without giving information to the forest or police authorities.

According to Takawale, the post-mortem report said the doe died of multiple injuries. "We are looking for eyewitnesses so that the identity of the vehicle and its driver can be established. There are a large number of sambar in the Pathargaon jungle. We have booked the unidentified vehicle driver under sections of the Wild Life Protection Act," he added.
